Making a difference to the community by Toyota Teach
In 1992, Toyota South Africa and the Toyota South Africa Fund developed the Toyota Teach Primary School Project (TTPSP). TTPSP works in a 50 km radius from the Toyota South Africa Motor factory in Prospecton, south of Durban.
TTPSP is an educational programme working in previously disadvantaged schools in township and rural areas.
This programme assists schools and teachers who may have difficulty with the implementation of different curriculum documents and policies. Graded reading programmes, mathematic, natural science and technology education workshops are held to ensure that educationally sound methodologies and strategies, as prescribe by the Department of Education, are implemented and monitored. School management teams and school governing bodies are supported and assisted to promote school functionality at all levels.
The key focus areas of this programme are to promote language literacy, mathematics, natural science, technology and early childhood development. The programme also assists learners who have barriers to learning. Curriculum and professional development takes place on a continuous basis to stay up to date with the latest educational trends and developments. Mentors are appointed to schools to mentor and establish the needs and successes of the educational programme. The Toyota Teach Project would like to ensure that learners at grass root levels are given an opportunity to receive quality teaching and learning.
Specific interventions are implemented at schools during a two-year cycle and since its inception, Toyota Teach has benefited more than 261 schools and 29 000 learners.
